house's relationships
Yesterday night, I was tossing and turning in my bed when I thought of House (≧∀≦)ゞ
At this point, the show is a familiar face in my dark room. Whenever I feel the listless disappointment of still being awake, I turn to House, one of my only solaces.
Anyways, I was thinking about House's relationships throughout the show. This train of thought was prompted by a Reddit post I had read recently, which was about people hating the House/Cameron relationship. Why? I wanted to ask them. I actually quite liked their relationship but hated how the writers basically ditched it (perhaps due to overwhelming viewer discontent) and ended it sloppily.
Here is my personal (and not at all objective) ranking of House's relationships, from the pilot to the finale!
1. House/Dominika
Perhaps this is simply because I find Dominika attractive, or perhaps there's more to it. While Dominika is attractive, I find her personality quite suited to House's. She is portrayed to be bubbly, enthusiastic and carefree, though she can be witty and intelligent at times. During the immigration check-up, she said:
I am clever enough not to fall in love with you.
Speaking of which, she's also a great actor (not talking about her actor) and finds doing illegal things extremely fun. Cue:
I had fun pranking fake fiance.
Watching her just go along with House's antics is very wholesome to me. Also, the way they were both quite intelligent and didn't care much for social conventions (or legal conventions) was very adorable. They express their personalities in different ways, House by being stoically sarcastic or downright mean, Dominika by being overly friendly and a bubbling fountain of energy.
This seemed like House's only healthy relationship, where it wasn't with his ex, his boss, the sister of a girl in the mental hospital or his employee. Dominika was outside of House's work life, so when he was with her he could escape the hospital (for once). That is very important for a workaholic like House. No matter how smart and ambitious you are, you have to take a break. And Dominika is a much better option than getting punched out in bars.
2. House/Cameron
When Cameron first revealed her feelings for House, I was very confused and a little disgusted. Not only did she look half his age, their temperaments were completely opposite. And in the real world, opposites do not attract.
During their dinner date, albeit feeling awkward, I was also drawn into their relationship. I started asking myself if this could work.
I wanted it to work. Cameron was nice, and House had already stated that he found her attractive. When I saw how Cameron looked at House, I could see that she really cared, that her concern was genuine. Really, she was a bleeding heart just like Wilson, but less assertive and more patient. She just cared so much, and I think that House really could've used that.
I probably would've liked this relationship more if it had more screen time and if the writer's hadn't so deviously deviated from it.
3. House/Stacy
This was one of House's first relationships and I was honestly appalled. How could someone as hot as Stacy ever see House as attractive? I had a mental checklist I was ticking off when I first saw them sleep together: not ripped, not cool, not rich, not loving. Plus, he was a chronic pain in the ass, extremely rude and balding. What did she see in him?
Also, I didn't like the fact that she was cheating on her husband, Mark. But I really liked the episode where they were stuck at the airport. I suppose it was from a book I read with a similar scene, which really tugged at my heartstrings. Nonetheless, I found the episode's cinematography done excruciatingly well. They captured the airport vibe so well!
The whole time House was sleeping with Stacy, I was sort of hoping for Mark to stand up (from his wheelchair) and punch him. Yes, I like seeing House get punched. Hit me.
This relationship was quite alright in terms of writing. On top of that, the ending was bittersweet and very neatly tied up. But it wasn't the best, the most dramatic or the most exciting relationship. It was actually pretty mediocre, which is not what I like.
4. House/Cuddy (ranking based on pre-S7 episodes)
The whole S7 storyline felt really forced and the ending was very illogical. I kind of wished they kept House/Cuddy as a sort of pining relationship and not a real one. They worked way better that way.
I remember the storyline where Cuddy was trying to get pregnant from sperm donors and how House went out of his way to get Cuddy to meet them. He said something along the lines of:
You would never have even talked to that guy, let alone slept with him!
The whole time I was waiting for him to say "Take my sperm instead". Haha. It never came.
Haha sperm joke. Did you get it?
5. House/Sister of girl in mental hospital
My real thoughts while watching House fondle this girl: Does he seriously need a relationship going on all the time? He is at a literal mental hospital! Give him a break...
I liked their deep conversations after the fondling, where she went to the mental hospital and talked about making it official or something. Of course, he declined, the reason for which I forgot.
Honestly, she seemed like a chill person at the start, since she let House take Freedom Master for a ride on her car. Very reckless, very chill.
Unfortunately, I don't like how she slowly became a different person, or how she was cheating on her husband (again with the cheating!).
The ending was pretty sad but nice in retrospect of the whole mental hospital arc ending. She actually had to go.
That's all of House's romantic relationships! Most of these suffered from a lack of development or screen time (or both). Fortunately, these can be made up for with a modern invention called fanfiction. I've been scrolling through the House M.D. section of Archive of Our Own (AO3) and found mostly House/Wilson pieces, which is quite hilarious but not shocking as gay pairings are more popular on AO3, while straight pairings usually dominate Wattpad.
Anyways, if you're interested in having your ship dreams realised, go check out AO3 ( •̀ ω •́ )✧
